It is fluid damped and incorporates a thermal expansion chamber and compensation magnet. Fully gimballed, can be mounted, and seen by the pilot, at any angle from horizontal to vertical. Large, easy to see 3" size (allow 4" for mounting) and locate away from electrical interference. Often mounted on the top of an instrument panel, however can be mounted anywhere, even upside down on the aircraft roof. Superior to general aviation type compasses in terms of stability and clarity. Often used when a Directional Gyro is not fitted to an aircraft. Most used in sport aircraft, hang gliders, microlights and homebuilt aircraft - no release note.
